Studio, August 4, 2014: Renew Wellness painting and Jonah series
I'm not one to broadcast my life.  I don't tweet.  I rarely post on Facebook.  But recently finishing my doctorate and looking for a minimum wage job to support my writing and artmaking has motivated me to think about how to (dare I say) market myself.  I am an artist, an accidental designer, and a community arts educator.  With some time on my hands to finally start painting again, I decided to start documenting my projects.  The office where all my research was piled only a few weeks ago is now strewn with paint tubes and half started canvases.  So here is what I am working on:
  • A series of paintings for my sister's new office building (on the easel).  She co-owns Renew Wellness, a counseling and yoga center.  We've been updating the logo and website this summer (check it out here) and now that they are moving into a new building, I am updating their decor as well!
  • A painting series based on my 2-year-old's drawings (two paintings on the right).  I try to paint at least 3 days a week during his nap.  When he wakes up, I take him into the studio and show him what I did while he was sleeping.  "Mommy's paintings.  Don't touch."  Since they're oils, he's not allowed to touch.  But he often watercolors and draws with me.  When I finish the three I am working on now, I'm planning to have him draw from them (as much as a 2 year old can anyway).  I'll be posting the completed works soon.
  • My grandmother collected postcards and recently gave the to my uncle, who has generously offered to let me work with them.  She filed them by state, and I am planning to work with the Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan cards and do some traveling, painting, writing, and family history.  To be continued!
