Postcards of Home

I recently read an interview with Kotryna Ula Kiliulyte and her project, Postcards from Home, which features nine Glasgow-based artists' photographs of their home countries - holiday snapshots, family archive, art work, anything. From this work, she curated an exhibit and postcard collection that can be purchased, written on, and sent. What is appealing about this work is that it is participatory. Kiliulyte is acting as curator and supplier--making connections between other people's ideas of home and belonging, packaging them, and making them available to others to use and form new connections as they inscribe new messages. However, Kiliulyte (at least in the interview I read) does not indicate her own connection to the places, people and things depicted in the artists' renderings of their homes.

As a museum studies student, collections and the act of collecting were common topics in coursework. Now, I am working with my grandmother's collection of postcards. Where do my own interests and hers intersect?

Curating a collection

Before the first class meeting of Museum History, each student was asked to submit a questionnaire about collections and museum experiences. I had not thought much about collecting. I grew up around museums and personal collections. My grandmother, obviously, collected postcards and helped me start a thimble collection when I was young. Since then, I've noticed a tendency, particularly on my father's side of the family, to collect and archive. The proclivity towards collecting may exist in other parts of my family, but it is not as thoroughly documented.
